Experiential learning

Hired in his fourth year through the computer science/math work experience program, Liuguo Zhang now works as a software engineer at Need For Speed (NFS) in Vancouver, a computer gaming firm.
At UVic, education extends beyond the classroom. Thousands of students take part in experiential learning each year, through practicum, internship and co-operative education programs. Students apply their academic knowledge in real-world environments by working for employers in Victoria and around the world. These programs link the university with employers, who are valued partners in education.
Practicum
Some programs require that students complete a mandatory practicum, which is a directed work experience in their field of study. The practicum allows students to apply their education in a hands-on environment before graduation. It's the perfect way to get a sense of the real-world responsibilities they will face after graduation, and to find the perfect niche within their field.
A practicum is mandatory for students completing the following undergraduate degrees:
- Bachelor of Arts in Linguistics
- Bachelor of Child and Youth Care
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing
- Bachelor of Social Work
- Most programs in the Faculty of Education
