UVic in the community

Nigel Livingston of CanAssist develops devices to help people with disabilities.
UVic's commitment to the social, cultural and economic advancement of the communities it serves close to home and around the world runs deep. Building strong partnerships with community organizations and actively engaging citizens from all walks of life is fundamental to the UVic approach. It's community service that takes many forms, from joint research projects or educational programs that address community needs and supplying expert speakers to schools, seniors groups and community organizations, to partnering with businesses to explore the commercial potential of the latest campus discoveries and applying student knowledge and energy to organizational challenges.
Finnerty Gardens
One of Canada 's best collections of rhododendrons, many of which were started from seed obtained from famous plant explorers, is on display in the University Finnerty Gardens. The garden contains more than over 4,000 different trees and shrubs with more than 1,500 rhododendron and azalea plants, including 200 collected rhododendron species, and a spectacular range of companion plants - ferns, vines, bulbs, groundcovers, ornamentals - artistically displayed on a 2.6 hectare (6.5 acre) site at the southwest corner of UVic's campus.
