Work While You Learn

Classroom learning is just one piece of the puzzle - at UVic, you'll be challenged to learn in new and dynamic ways. You can complement your academic studies with serious hands-on work experience through the Co-op Program or a practicum, test your boundaries by traveling overseas on an international exchange, embark on a field school adventure with students from around the world, or share your ideas with researchers in your field.

Co-op is an educational model that allows you to learn by doing, both in the classroom and workplace. Whether it's testing a career path or earning a paycheque, co-op can be a beneficial part to the overall university experience. Learn about sample schedules and possible opportunities.

The goal of UVic's Learning and Teaching Centre is to make sure that you, as a student, receive the highest quality education from your professors. We work with professors and teaching assistants to enhance the learning and teaching that goes on in and out of the classroom.

Your professors are widely known and respected for what we call Inspired Teaching, which is defined by:

  • High-quality academic instruction led by professors who are leaders in their fields.
  • Coursework that reflects UVic's drive to engage with our community and to promote the development of a sustainable society.
  • Faculty who create engaging classroom settings, incorporating their own innovative research and encouraging original thought.
  • A strong sense of accountability to students and their parents.

Co-operative
education

Co-op is an educational model that allows you to learn by doing, both in the classroom and workplace. Whether it's testing a career path or earning a paycheque, co-op can be a beneficial part to the overall university experience. As a co-op student, you'll learn interview and resume skills, apply and interview for jobs, and alternate four-month work terms with academic terms. You'll graduate with a network of contacts and up to a year of real-life work experience.

Visit the Co-op website for details about how to register for Co-op, average salaries, frequently asked questions, publications about Co-op, film clips and more.

Field
schools/study

UVic offers a wide range of field school opportunities in countries around the world. These off-campus university courses last up to four months, and usually involve a hands-on application of the subject matter. You could travel to locations across Canada and around the globe - the world could become your classroom. Many of UVic's science and social science programs offer some type of field school. Contact your department of interest for more information (some field schools are listed below)

Practicum

Some programs require that students complete a mandatory practicum, which is a directed work experience in their field of study. The practicum allows students to apply their education in a hands-on environment before graduation. It's the perfect way to get a sense of the real-world responsibilities they will face after graduation, and to find the perfect niche within their field.

A practicum is mandatory for students completing the following undergraduate degrees:

International
exchange

If you yearn for travel, but feel an equal desire to continue your studies, an international exchange helps you do both. UVic has agreements with approximately 40 institutions in 18 countries. From Europe to the South Pacific, from the Far East to the Netherlands, you have many corners of the world to choose from.

Time abroad can be as educational as any course work. Experiencing a different culture will deepen your understanding of others. And it's a great way to see the world.
Visit the International and Exchange Student Services website to learn about eligibility, course credit at UVic, how to apply and more.

Inspired
teaching

Our professors - your professors - are not only some of the most talented teachers and researchers you'll find; they are friends and mentors. They are widely known and respected for what we call Inspired Teaching, which is defined by:

  • High-quality academic instruction led by professors who are leaders in their fields.
  • Coursework that reflects UVic's drive to engage with our community and to promote the development of a sustainable society.
  • Faculty who create engaging classroom settings, incorporating their own innovative research and encouraging original thought.
  • A strong sense of accountability to students and their parents.

UVic's Teaching and Learning Centre strives to uphold these ideals every day, by providing resources for professors and teaching assistants, listening to student feedback and creating a supportive and dynamic environment for all.
