Walk the Google Earth map

Google Earth

The UVic Google Earth map allows you to view a high-resolution aerial photo of campus, and zoom in on 3-D models of campus buildings. To get started, you need to download and install the free Google Earth application on your computer.

  1. View user guide and system requirements.
  2. Download Google Earth application and install it.
  3. Right-click and save this kml file to your desktop and double-click on it to start Google Earth with UVic's features.

Tips for using the UVic Google Earth map

1. In the Layers pane in the lower left column, uncheck everything except Terrain.

2. Check the "Buildings" check box after everything has loaded.

3. Minimize the Layers and Search panes to enlarge the Places pane.

4. Check and uncheck folders and boxes one at a time, rather than all at once, to reduce the clutter of icons in the map window.

5. Go to Tools > Options > General, check "show web results in external browser".

6. For best navigation, use the wheel mouse to zoom in and out. Use the left mouse button to "grip" the map window to move the viewing area. You can tilt the perspective of the viewing area by then depressing the wheel-mouse.
