Work while you learn

main header

Hired through a work experience program, Liugou Zhang is living his dream as a software engineer at a franchise of Electronic Arts, the world's largest computer game publisher.

At the graduate level, a dynamic and challenging learning experience is essential. Expand your studies in the way that suits you best. You could choose to put your classroom knowledge into practice through a Co-op work term, test your boundaries by traveling overseas on an international exchange, embark on a field school adventure with students from around the world, or work side-by-side with cutting-edge researchers in your field. Your degree can be what you make it.

Teaching and Learning Centre

Teaching and learningWe take teaching seriously at UVic. In fact, our Teaching and Learning Centre is set up to support professors and teaching assistants as they create the best possible lessons for you. We work with professors and teaching assistants to enhance the learning and teaching that goes on in and out of the classroom. Many grad students work as teaching assistants, and gain access to a diverse pool of teaching resources to help them make the most of their teaching experience.

Co-operative
education

Co-op is an educational model that allows you to learn by doing, both in the classroom and workplace. Whether it's testing a career path or earning a paycheque, co-op can be a beneficial part to the overall university experience. As a graduate co-op student, you could even complete part of your research while working for a UVic professor.

Visit the Co-op website for details about how to register for Co-op, average salaries, frequently asked questions, publications about Co-op, film clips and more.

Field
schools/study

UVic offers a wide range of field school opportunities in countries around the world. These off-campus university courses last up to four months, and usually involve a hands-on application of the subject matter. You could travel to locations across Canada and around the globe - the world could become your classroom. Many of UVic's science and social science programs offer some type of field school. Contact your department of interest for more information (some field schools are listed below).

Department of Anthropology
Department of Biology
School of Earth and Ocean Sciences
Department of History

Practicum

Some programs require that students complete a mandatory practicum, which is a directed work experience in their field of study. The practicum allows students to apply their education in a hands-on environment before graduation. It's the perfect way to get a sense of the real-world responsibilities they'll face after graduation, and to find the perfect niche within their field.

A practicum is mandatory for students completing the following undergraduate degrees:

Bachelor of Arts in Linguistics
Bachelor of Child and Youth Care
Bachelor of Science in Nursing
Bachelor of Social Work
Most programs in the Faculty of Education

International
exchange

If you yearn for travel, but feel an equal desire to continue your studies, an international exchange helps you do both. UVic has agreements with approximately 40 institutions in 18 countries. From Europe to the South Pacific, from the Far East to the Netherlands, you have many corners of the world to choose from.

Time abroad can be as educational as any course work. Experiencing a different culture will deepen your understanding of others. And it's a great way to see the world. Visit the International and Exchange Student Services website to learn about eligibility, course credit at UVic, how to apply and more.

Inspired
teaching

Our professors - your professors - are not only some of the most talented teachers and researchers you'll find; they are friends and mentors. They are widely known and respected for what we call Inspired Teaching, and are leading researchers in their fields.

Explore our Expertise Database to discover some of the amazing research that is being conducted by UVic professors. You could share your ideas and energy with these world-renowned researchers by applying for a position as a research assistant. Or, if you want to try your hand at teaching, you could work as a teaching assistant and share your expertise with a class of undergraduates.
