A timeline for parents and family:
While your student is in Grade 9, 10, or 11
- Start looking at university options
- Does your student want to stay close to home?
- Would your student prefer a university farther away?
- Compare program availability
- What majors, minors, diplomas, and areas of study are available?
- Does the program have an honours option?
- Ask about co-op opportunities.
- Look into scholarship and financial aid options
- What are the residence options?
- Can your student commute and live at home?
- If your student lives on campus, is there guaranteed housing?
- Take a tour
- Look for open house events
- Know the curriculum requirements (what courses from Grade 11 and 12 are used for Admission?
Grade 12
- Fall
- Make sure your student is enrolled in the required courses for individualadmission requirements
- Apply early--many universities like UVic offer a chance to self-report grades
- Visit the campus. Take a tour, even if you have already done so.
- Spring
- Application and scholarship deadlines are generally at the end of February
- Look for campus events and receptions to gauge your fit with the community
- April-May--make your selection. If you have applied to several universities, now's the time to make a decision and pay your registration deposit
- June--make sure you have completed a housing application

Departments and programs
Aboriginal
programs
UVic continues to build on our commitment to Canada's Indigenous peoples, and we strive to offer relevant programs that address the needs and interests of our Aboriginal students. Many of UVic's faculties offer undergraduate programs that have Aboriginal content or focus.
Faculty of Law
UVic's law program leads Canadian law schools in developing expertise on Aboriginal law, establishing a unique program for Indigenous students and adopting an Aboriginal equity plan. The faculty has separate admissions criteria for Aboriginal applicants.
Faculty of Education
The faculty has embarked on major initiatives to provide opportunities for Aboriginal students to become teachers. These initiatives include:

- Various undergraduate degree programs
- A wide selection of courses focusing on Aboriginal education and ways of knowing
Faculty of Fine Arts
The faculty offers a certificate program that is designed for mature students of First Nations ancestry who wish to develop specialized skills in creative writing and/or visual arts in a First Nations Context:
This program is offered in cooperation with the En-owkin International School of Writing and Visual Arts in Penticton, BC, where students complete their course requirements.
Faculty of Human and Social Development
School of Nursing
There is a growing need for Aboriginal nurses in Canada and internationally. UVic's School of Nursing offers a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing for registered nurses and for students continuing from other institutions. In Victoria, students begin their studies at Camosun College then complete years three and four at UVic. Camosun College has eight seats designated for Aboriginal applicants each year.
School of Public Administration
In partnership with the Indigenous Governance Program, the school offers a:

This interdisciplinary program instructs both Indigenous and non-Indigenous students with Indigenous worldviews and ways of knowing:
The Department of Linguistics and the Division of Continuing Studies offer this program. Students complete part of the program at UVic and part of the program at the En'owkin Centre in Penticton. The program encourages participants to relate their learning to practical issues of language loss and recovery within their communities.
