Lecture/Seminar Roots of the Palestinian-Israeli Conflict 2009-01-07 16:30:00
Description

As part of our weekly on-going Public Lecture Series, the Centre for Studies in Religion and Society presents:

"Roots of the Palestinian-Israeli Conflict: Understanding the Religious Aspects."

Lecturer: Martin Bunton
UVic Department of History

Far from being based on ancient religious rivalries, the roots of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict are barely a hundred years old. This talk will explore particular historical conjunctures out of which the conflict developed and was transformed, in order to help explain why religion has come to influence various policies and actors in the way it has (and why the conflict has been so difficult to solve, perhaps even impossible).

Martin Bunton received a BA from the University of British Columbia in 1988 and a DPhil from the University of Oxford in 1998. Prior to joining the department of history at the University of Victoria, he also taught as a sessional instructor at Simon Fraser University and was a visiting fellow at Harvard University. His book Colonial Land Policies in Palestine, 1917–1936 was published last year by Oxford University Press. He is currently working on a comparison of government land policies in Middle East territories under British rule in the interwar period.

Film "Grindhouse" 2009-01-07 19:00:00
Description

SEE IT THE WAY IT WAS MEANT TO BE SEEN!
Robert Rodriguez & Quentin Tarantino (USA, 2007, 192 minutes; 18A)
“In their crazily funny and exciting tribute to the grimy glory days of 1970s exploitation films, Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez re-create the junk cinema of their youth with an appreciation for its cheeseball squalor. Tarantino and Rodriguez have conceived Grindhouse as an old-school, three-hour night at the movies, a trash-heaven double bill complete with scratchy mismatched prints and trailers for unspeakably bad slasher films. The first movie is Rodriguez's Planet Terror, a living-dead thriller, set in a present day that feels just like 1974, with zombies that spurt raspberry Jell-O blood. Death Proof, Tarantino's crash-and-burn homage to the road-demon genre, is a flawed yet audacious hell-bent head trip. It starts off with a jam session of trash-talking girls, only to introduce Kurt Russell, who turns out to be a lot less charming than he looks. Tarantino is merely setting us up for the wildest, rowdiest, most bravura two-car road duel since the grind-house era. It will leave you laughing, gasping, and thrilled.” --Entertainment Weekly

Exhibit In Search of Lost Time: Cameron Ian MacLeod (1958-1983) 2009-01-07 07:00:00
Description

The McPherson Library Gallery presents an exhibit of recently acquired works by Cameron Ian MacLeod. The student of such influential painters as Jack Shadbolt, Gordon A. Smith, and Takao Tanabe, MacLeod was a promising young artist. His artistic growth was tragically cut short by his death in 1983, at the age of 25. Despite the brevity of his career, MacLeod's work demonstrates depth of feeling and variety in style. The exhibition will feature his work, along with selected pieces by three of his mentors.
