University Centre's combination of administrative offices, auditorium
and art gallery is testimony to the many facets of the university.
Built in 1978, the centre houses student and ancillary services, the student information centre,
accounting, financial aid, admissions and records, graduate records,
co-operative education, and a cafeteria.
Musicians, lecturers and other performers play to capacity audiences
in the 1200-seat University Centre Farquhar Auditorium. Adjacent
to the auditorium
is the Maltwood Museum and Art Gallery, where the university displays collections of fine arts and visiting installations.
The auditorium is named for Hugh Farquhar (1910 - 1984), a former UVic president and dean of education who was a central figure in the planning and development of the University Centre.
The gallery is named in honour of Katherine Emma Maltwood (1878 - 1961), a sculptor and antiquarian who bequeathed her collection of fine, decorative and applied arts to UVic.
