Craigdarroch - Emily Carr (REC)

The Emily Carr residence was built in 1964. Originally a women's residence, the four-storey building is now home to men and women, with 26 single rooms and 28 double rooms.

Emily Carr (1871-1945) was of Canada's greatest and most original painters. She was also an accomplished writer and won a Governor-General's Award in 1941. Carr was born and died in Victoria.

The Craigdarroch residence complex is named for Craigdarroch Castle, the former Robert Dunsmuir mansion in Victoria’s Rockland neighborhood, which was home to UVic’s predecessor institution, Victoria College, from 1921-1946. There are four residences in the complex: The Emily Carr and Margaret Newton halls were built in the summer of 1964, followed by the Arthur Currie and David Thompson halls in 1967.
